Here the get method finds a key entry for 'e' and finds its value which is 1.
We add this to the other 1 in characters.get (character, 0) + 1 and get 2 as result.

You evidently know what .get invoked on a dictionary does, that's what's being called for each key in the dictionary.
get and set are accessors, meaning they're able to access data and info in private fields (usually from a backing field) and usually do so from public properties (as you can see in the above example)..
