Auto Train, other than possibly contributing to Amtrak’s bottom line, does nothing else for the national network. It creates no connecting traffic, diverts Amtrak equipment and other resources away from the national network, and might even take away some passengers that might otherwise ride the regular trains to Florida and rent a car.

Yesterday, I caught Amtrak #5(15) with two private cars from from Patrick Henry Creative Promotions. They are the Evelyn A. Henry and the Warren R. Henry. The train was running about ten minutes late east of Ottumwa, Iowa.
It will probably make it easier for pro-Amtrak Republicans in Congress to shield Amtrak from the worst of any appropriation cuts. Remember, Amtrak is a "private company" owned by the government, not a government agency.
