However, because there is no door, I am thinking about just building the deck as freestanding without attaching it to the house. One downside that I can think of is that the deck edge might drift relative to the house, making it look crooked. Is this is a problem? What are the downsides of making the deck freestanding?

Attaching the top of the wall to a structural member above is usually the easiest way to provide lateral support but not the only way. It's possible to build partition walls that don't extend all the way to the ceiling above, usually by extending the end studs through the floor to attach to the joist below.

Don't drill the beams without engineering approval. Putting holes in beams changes their strength and that could be bad. They do make clamps that screw on to an I-beam flange for attaching things. If you need to attach to the beams, that's probably the way to go.
