The emperor of Japan is the only currently reigning monarch whose title is translated into English as "Emperor". Both emperors and kings are monarchs or sovereigns, both emperor and empress are considered monarchical titles.

Emperor, title designating the sovereign of an empire, conferred originally on rulers of the Roman Empire and on various later European rulers, including the Holy Roman emperors, the Russian tsars, and Napoleon Bonaparte.
