As far as summer heat, as a Floridian for the past 8 years, I've heard similar comparisons about the temps (and the humidity) from the northeastern transplants living around me.
Personally, I consider myself part Floridian. There's no place outside of MA that I've spent more of my life in than FL. It's a funny state in a lot of ways with some remarkably different regions and the panhandle has a lot more to do culturally with Alabama than it does south or central FL which is where I've spent most of my time.
