Today, goon is synonymous with boxed wine in Australian slang, which leaves us with goon sacks, the inner bags that contain the wine inside the wine boxes.

The bags are waterproof, and many goon users have been pretty creative when it comes to using them. The most popular use of packaging is the so-called goon crown when one uses the carton box as a hat.

Boxed wine, also known as cask wine, bag-in-box wine, or goon, is any wine that is sold in bag-in-box packaging. The wine is stored in a strong, flexible bag made of synthetic plastic films which is held within in a corrugated cardboard box, with a one-way plastic valve for dispensing the wine. [1] Boxed wine is generally quite affordable.

The goon bag, officially known as a wine cask, was invented in 1965 by South Australian winemaker Thomas Angove. Initially designed as a practical way to store wine, the bag-and-box combo quickly gained popularity for its affordability and convenience.

Despite this, the goon bag and the drinking game in which it stars have achieved icon status of late. In 2014, at Western Australia’s popular annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition, a 49-foot inflatable goon bag sculpture by artist Norton Flavel was far and away the most beloved and photographed exhibit.
