FN's "machine gun steel" is a low alloy proprietary steel used to make M240 and M249 barrels. It is not the usual chromium-vanadium-molybdenum alloy used in most M16/M4 barrels. Is it better than chromium-vanadium-molybdenum alloy, probably a little better in resisting throat wear after continuous firing.
