Can anyone suggest a hardwood that is close (and available) to the pale white of the birch plywood that will finish well? Most of the birch lumber I'm finding on line looks pretty dark compared to the baltic birch ply.
A decent hardwood retailer will have 1/2" thick lumber in a variety of widths. I buy 1/2" thick S4S lumber all the time (hard maple, poplar, red oak, walnut and white oak, in particular). Check around with the lumber yards in your area.
A lot of the hardwood flooring manufacturers sub out their moldings. Look up Artistic Finishes. They are one of the major suppliers of hardwood moldings. You may also find a hardwood distributor locally that may have what you need in stock. i have about 25 years or more in the industry and speak from experience.
