I can enable/disable SpeedStep, adjust and enable/disable auto-power on, Wake-on-LAN, etc. None of those have had any effect. I did also check the boot order, and all that is enabled is the CDROM (first), and IDE hard drive (second). The system boots fine from the CDROM, and will boot fine from a second hard drive.
It is written to adjust to any monitor resolution. If I establish connection using remote desktop and then start the application, it picks up the Remote Desktop's resolution (its settings) instead of the original desktop resolution.

the problem appears to be that when Skype (and some other apps, apparently) auto-adjust gain and/or boost, pulse audio pushes it over 100% which numbs Skype. so the problem is with pulse-audio, not with Skype
Go to settings > audio > adjust the equalizer settings. I would suggest changing the setting and then monitoring and if the issue continues change to the next option. Within the audio settings go to enhancements and turn Dolby ON/OFF. Do the same with the audio leveling setting. If possible, try another set of headphones with this phone.
