pH and pOH are defined as the negative log of hydrogen ion concentration and hydroxide concentration, respectively. pOH is related to pH and can be easily calculated from pH.
The pOH of a solution is not usually measured, as it is easily calculated from an experimentally determined pH value. The pH of a solution can be directly measured using a pH meter (Figure 14.4).
To calculate the pOH of a solution you need to know the concentration of the hydroxide ion in moles per liter (molarity). The pOH is then calculated using the expression:
