It used the pressure of the transmission pump, via the draining fluid collecting in one side of the tube to push the new fluid into the transmission. Pretty simple machine. No pumps at all. Other machines use pump and level transmitters that can get fouled up and be a problem. All that being said, This exchange process is fairly easy.

Got a 2023 Honda Odyssey. Should I go by the maintenance reminder for transmission fluid change or stick to a set interval?
Also, is Toyota transmission fluid absolutely necessary or are there others out there that perform just as well? Toyota WS, Idemitsu TLS LV and AISIN work well. I'd opt for 30k fluid changes. If you have a cooler which would be advisable you can almost do a complete fluid change instead of a few quarts here and there.

The advise to not change transmission fluid is from older transmissions that did not have a fluid change interval. On the 2012 that interval is every fourth oil change or every 30k.
