I have a black-ish koi (don't know what to call it, black on top, redish in the mid, and whiteish on belly. and some cloud like scales; white & lined in black) Anyway, he/she has gotten several boo boos this year one of which was right behind the head.
It’s hard not to start with the basics of good Koi pond design but that’s an entirely different subject and can be addressed elsewhere. The plumbing principles that I’ll try to discuss are universal to all ponds.
I’ve had this koi for about a month now and for somewhat reason she likes to lay on the bottom with clamped fins. She has an appetite and has other pond mates who act completely normal. Water parameters are ALL good, I always check them. At first I thought this behavior was completely normal but it seems like the clamped fins are not a good sign. It’s a 2000 gallon pond.
I have one 10-11 inch koi in a 20 gallon tank with 2 5-6 inch goldfish. I have recently moved them into this tank. The water quality is excellent as of now, however, it has not 'cycled' over yet. I recently noticed that my koi had lost one scale. The area where the scale should be is not irritated or red (I've attached a picture as proof).
