I don't really care whether I read/write insecure or unsecure, but clearly 'standard' usage is overwhelmingly insecure. What surprised me was that to the world at large, apparently, 'devices' aren't normally evaluated in terms of their security. It's mostly 'systems', 'protocols', 'communications channels', and such.
From M-W: self-esteem: a reasonable or justifiable sense of one's worth or importance A person with low self-esteem lacks a sense of their own worth, value, or importance. If you're looking for a word that's less extreme, how about insecure? Also from M-W: insecure: not confident or sure
If you are looking for a word that expresses more of an emotional reason for the obsession with one's appearance, perhaps insecure might work. M-W says: not confident or sure,deficient in assurance : beset by fear and anxiety. Again, it can apply to things other than appearance. I liked your suggestion of "self-conscious".
