The first observable new moon nearest to the spring equinox marked the first day of Nisan. Passover began 13 days later. Jesus celebrated the Passover with his apostles, dismissed Judas Iscariot, and then instituted the Lord’s Evening Meal. This meal replaced the Jewish Passover and therefore should be observed only once a year.
The Passover meal is finished. After Judas leaves, Jesus begins the Lord’s Supper, often called the Last Supper, a special meal of bread and wine.
To Jesus and his family, the Passover is not just a one-day event. The day after the Passover is the beginning of the seven-day Festival of Unleavened Bread. (Mark 14:1) It is considered part of the Passover season. The trip from their home in Nazareth, the stay in Jerusalem, and the return to their home takes about two weeks.
