Patara (Πάταρα) was an important Lycian city on the Mediterranean coast of modern-day Turkey. It’s also home to one of the best beaches in the world. Patara has been around since at least the 13th century BC, and was likely settled by Dorians from Crete.

Patara was a renowned port for storing and transporting grains from Anatolia to Rome. In the early 2nd century, the Seleukos Kingdom took control of Patara, and it was subsequently declared the capital of Lycia in 167 and 168 BC.

Patara is an ancient city located on the west coast of Lycia, today the town of Kalkan in Antalya. It was once a leading city in the Lycian League along with Xanthos and Letoon.
