Popeye may be famous for the confident credo "I yam what I yam," but that doesn't mean the Sailor Man says no to a good makeover. The spinach-gulping and bottle-armed comics hero turned 93 in January.

Popeye is what he is, a good-guy underdog with bulging forearms, a mean uppercut and a penchant for canned spinach. The only thing he loves more than spinach and the sea is his flighty, flirty girlfriend, Olive Oyl.

On January 17th1929, E.C. Segar introduced Popeye into Thimble Theatre’s cast. With a simple “Ja think I’m a cowboy?”, Popeye went from a supporting character to the star of the comic strip, and eventually into animated adventures produced in different eras by Fleischer Studios, Famous Studios and King Features.
