Known as the "City of Presidents", [3] Quincy is the birthplace of two U.S. presidents — John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams —as well as John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first and third governor of Massachusetts.

Set off from Braintree and incorporated as a town (township) in 1792, it was renamed to honour Colonel John Quincy, a prominent local resident. Quincy is notable as the home of the celebrated Adams family.
It includes 71 sites in the 36-block National Register Quincy Historic District. A free 20-page Quincy Walking Tour booklet and map can be picked up at the Quincy Main Street office (104-A N. Adams Street) and at most downtown Quincy businesses.
This is the birthplace of John Adams (1735-1826) and his son John Quincy Adams (1767-1848), the second and sixth U.S. presidents. John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, was also born in Quincy.
