Sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized (0.0625 to 2 mm) silicate grains, cemented together by another mineral. Sandstones comprise about 20–25% of all sedimentary rocks.

Sandstone is one of the most widespread sedimentary rocks on Earth, formed through the accumulation and cementation of mineral grains — mainly quartz and feldspar. These grains, carried by wind, rivers, or ocean waves, slowly build up layers that preserve the history of ancient environments.

What is Sandstone? Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand-size grains of mineral, rock, or organic material. It also contains a cementing material that binds the sand grains together and may contain a matrix of silt- or clay-size particles that occupy the spaces between the sand grains.

Sandstone, lithified accumulation of sand-sized grains (0.063 to 2 mm [0.0025 to 0.08 inch] in diameter). It is the second most common sedimentary rock after shale, constituting about 10 to 20 percent of the sedimentary rocks in the Earth’s crust.

Sandstones are clastic sedimentary rocks that are composed largely of sand-sized grains (>50% particles between 1/16 and 2 mm diameter). Sandstones make up approximately 14% of sedimentary rocks and can be found in a wide variety of depositional environments including alluvial fans, rivers and floodplains, beaches, and submarine fans.
