They were done by genuine master armorers and 'smiths, and the .308's were made to especially tight specifications. However, ALL the gas cylinders were bored out, and the pistons on the operating rod ends were all larger than specification. This is O.K. operationally, but if you change out rods, you'll generally have to find an oversized piston.
The downside is your rifle is out of commission for a while. I’ve done a side by side comparison and the Shooting sight trigger is as good as the professional jobs on my rifles. The key is having GI hammer and trigger. This was voiced by the smiths doing my rifles, and has been repeated here in the forums.
Any ideas on smiths that can do this work? The Johnson Rifle forum is no more so I can’t ask there. Not all smiths had serial numbers in the crane area but the one on the butt of the frame ( often covered by after market grips ) is the serial number Assembly numbers ( no relation to serial ) in the crane is standard I have owned a ton of smiths and less than half had a serial number in the crane area.
