Transmission slipping would be when you’re driving in motion, and when the transmission changes from one gear to the next (or changes the pulley ratio in a CVT), the RPMS go up but it doesn’t catch the “gear”, and you loose speed or stay the same speed because the transmission isn’t engaged and propelling your car further.

First, has the transmission fluid been properly measured to make sure it isn't over filled? An overfilled trans will also whine (fluid too high and getting into the rotating assemblies causing foaming / whine).

You can also just look at the transmission pan. The 6 speed is square-ish or rectangle in shape and plastic, the cvt is triangular and metal. Go to rockauto for your model, open the automatic transmission section and trans pan and you can see the difference.
