The English word Tuesday is derived from Old English and means “Tiw‘s day,” a spelling variant of Tyr’s day. In most languages with Latin origins, the day is named after the god and planet Mars.
Tuesday was originally named for Mars, which is not only a planet but the name of the Roman god of war, and this Roman name for the third day of the week was retained in most of the Romance languages, such as in French (mardi), Spanish (martes), and Italian (martedì), to name a few.

Tuesday comes from Tiu, or Tiw, the Anglo-Saxon name for Tyr, the Norse god of war. Tyr was one of the sons of Odin, or Woden, the supreme deity after whom Wednesday was named. Similarly, Thursday originates from Thor’s-day, named in honour of Thor, the god of thunder.
