Construction on Vinita Lake Park began in 2016 and was officially opened in the Spring of 2017. The Park, designed as a primitive recreational space, allows citizens of Vinita and its visitors to enjoy nature in a peaceful setting, and to fish in a 45-acre lake that is filled with bass, crappie, and catfish. History of Vinita Established in 1871 in Indian Territory, Vinita was located at the crossing of the Atlantic and Pacific (now Burlington Northern Santa Fe) Railroad and the Missouri, Kansas, Texas (now Union Pacific) Railway. Elias C. Boudinot is credited with founding the town, naming it for his friend, nationally renowned sculptor Vinnie Ream.
