In the early part of the 20th century extensive predator control program basically wiped out the entire red wolf population. Only two populations of red wolf were believe to exist by the late 1930s. One in the Ozarks/Quachita Mountain region of Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma and one in southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana.
Phil Gibson EXTENSIVELY researched the wild canid population in Arkansas for nearly 10 years in the 1970s and 80s, and what he found was a big hybrid swarm, with red wolf and domestic dog blood in the coyote population, He found a few pure coyotes, but NO pure red wolves.
